4/19/2002: Updated outdated information. Added Tools links.
5/19/2001: Removed FhG suggestion for MP3. Now just LAME. IMO LAME sounds better than FhG at any bitrate when --lowpass is increased from the default setting.
4/22/2001: Replaced info for setting delay code for VobSub files with info on using VobSub cutter.
4/7/2001: Added information regarding DirectShow VobSub and setting the delay code for its .idx file. Replaced vStrip command line info with vStrip GUI info.
This guide covers various software to deal with various issues. The major issues that are especially important when it comes to anime DVDs are:
- Alternate Angle/Seamless Branching
Subtitle is the single biggest problem as there are not many people who absolutely need that feature outside of anime otakus. But that is critical to us.
Alternate angle wasn't much of an issue before, but now it is becoming to. One of the problem for us is that most software designed to deal with multiangle is designed just for the main angle. In most anime DVDs with MA, that would be the english version (or modified/overlaid version). What we want is often angle 2, and support for that needs special attention.
Telecine is often overlooked, but most hollywood DVDs have this as well. So it is quite easy to solve with many software having solutions for it. But it is a complex issue which has no perfect solution and there never will be. That's the nature of telecining.
